Did you ever have something you really cared about – and you just absolutely had to know that it would not be disturbed in any way? You can call me paranoid – but I put way too much of my time and energy into my projects. If something ever happened to one of them, I would want to know:

  • When and where it was happened
  • Who is responsible
  • Saving proof of the incident

In this installment of the Box Project club, we’ll build and code a security system based on the cheap and ubiquitous Rasberry Pi computer. This UNIX-based computer is smaller than a credit card but it has the power to handle all the job requirements I listed above – and more!

Students will receive a box containing a Raspberry Pi and starter kit (giving students everything they need to make this project and make many new ones) and a USB Web Cam. By the end of the class, they will walk out with a security solution that will catch even the sneakiest of thieves and pranksters. No experience is necessary!

If you’ve never worked with the Raspberry Pi before, this is a great introduction. You’ll install the operating system  and set up security on  your Pi computer. We’ll also spend some time learning some basic UNIX Commands, which will give students the knowledge to fine-tune the system over time – and give them the ability to tackle new RasPi projects in the future. Then we’ll get busy coding  and building the project.

Students should bring their own laptops (UNIX, windows or Mac) and a 16 GB (minimum) SD Card.

The class will take place Saturday morning November 18th at 9 am. The deadline to sign up is November 8th at midnight.
