The Open Source software revolution has had a profound impact on our lives. From Social Media to cellphones, to robotics, we humans can’t seem to get enough.
And when you start digging into all these technologies, there is one constant to all of them – UNIX and Open Source Software. Not only does this operating system (and all its different flavors) run the majority of the world’s Web servers, but the software built off of it has created all the apps that have become part of our everyday lives! Yes, Google, Facebook, Youtube, and Gmail all are built with Open Source software that run on UNIX. And did I mention that Open Source software is FREE!!!!
The Silicon Valley has adopted Open Source Software and, in the process, has become the center of the universe for technological innovation. But the sad fact is that Fairfield County is, with few exceptions, a Microsoft shop. There are no good places to go to learn the software tools that are changing the world … until now!
This course of study has a total of 8 2-hour sessions, in which st-dents will:
- Build their very own Bluetooth and WiFi-enabled laptop, using the Raspberry Pi computer. This is a full-fledged computer that can be used for homework and projects alike. They’ll learn ways to download thousands of free open source software programs
- Set up their own Web server and learn to use PHP/MySQL to build and manipulate data tables and create dynamic web pages that interact with clients.
- Build and program a UNIX-based robot, using Python.
- We’ll finish the class by creating a Bluetooth and WiFi-enabled laptop that students can use with their upcoming projects
